Penny, Katy, Tammy, and Spence were nearing the downtown area when they spotted the blockade at the end of North College Street. College Street ended at Spring Street just below the park entrance. They cut east on Coler and then south again two blocks to arrive at the northwest corner of the square, right across from the drug store. On the walk to town, they had encountered no interference, save for a few catcalls from soldiers passing in transport trucks as they admired, in their crass way, the young women. Penny, age twenty, and Tammy, at nineteen, were likely to draw a lot of attention from the military, but it was decided the night before that this could be to the kid’s advantage since it would keep the soldiers minds on what they were looking at and off of who they were supposed to be looking for, as long as there were no close encounters.

The two girls were at the height of their youthful beauty, but in a wholesome, girl-next-door kind of way. They were not the gaunt, skinny things that frequented the covers of magazines, and they had no desire to be. Penny was a towhead, and Tammy’s hair was a darker version of her brothers’ chestnut, the rich auburn color only revealed when lit by bright sunlight. Katy was seventeen, only two months older than Spence, and a red-head, unlike her sister, but a younger version of the same beauty with a smattering of freckles across her nose that made her appear younger than she was. Spencer was taller and lankier than his younger brother, both boys taking their coloring from their mother’s side of the family, though he was built just like Granddad McCavendish. He was the youngest of this foursome and now found himself in the impossible position of trying to be protector, at least in his own mind, of three vulnerable young women. The truth was, however, that Penny was the natural leader of the group and asserted her authority without hesitation, and usually without argument.

Looking out on the square, the four noted the two large tanks that were parked on the lawn of the courthouse at opposite corners with two to three soldiers around each one. On corners without the tanks, sandbag bunkers had been set up with .50 caliber machine guns behind each. The guns secured with canvas covers over the muzzles, but they were intimidating just the same. Soldiers could be seen everywhere.

Penny reminded everyone to laugh softly and act like they were goofing around, even after entering the drug store, assuming they would get across without being stopped. They all took a deep breath and stepped out from the curb. Spence immediately did a funny kind of hop and turned, walking backwards and laughing, a bit too loudly for his sister’s comfort. Tammy frowned at him.

“Knock it off!” she said in a harsh whisper.

“I didn’t do anything,” Spence replied through clenched teeth, still hopping backwards. “I’m trying to horse around, like
